Gukesh Dommaraju Wins World Championship!
GM Gukesh Dommaraju shows his emotions upon winning.
The World Chess Championship concluded on Thursday when GM Gukesh Dommaraju won the final round 14 game against defending champion GM Ding Liren when Liren resigned. Dommaraju becomes the 18th player to earn the title of official FIDE world champion. He is the second world champion from India (GM Viswanathan Anand was the champ from 2007-2013), and at age 18, he is the youngest player to ever claim the title.
Following the match, both players showed appreciation for one another. Liren called it his best tournament of the year and said he had no regret in losing the World Championship title to Dommaraju. Likewise, Dommaraju commended Liren. He acknowledged the struggles Liren had gone through last year and complimented him on how well he fought for the entire match.
Match Facts:
- The match took place in Singapore from November 25th through December 12th.
- 9 of the 14 games ended in draws, including seven draws in a row for Games 4-10
- Dommaraju took his first lead only after winning a wild Game 11
- The match score was tied at 6.5 going into the final game, meaning if either player won, they would win the entire match.
Gukesh Facts:
- He is from the city of Chennai in southern India.
- Started playing chess at seven years old
- Earned the title of Grandmaster at age 12, the third youngest ever
- Has earned several medals representing India in the Asian Games and Chess Olympiad
- First player from India to be crowned world champion since Viswanathan Anand in 2013.
The games with analysis to help you along can all be found on YouTube. Did your kids watch the match? Let us know at Kid Chess News!

Meet our Coaches: Jack Shivertaker
Jack has been playing chess for most of his life, ever since he learned to play in the Kid Chess program. He attended the University of Florida, earning a bachelor’s degree in Sports Journalism, and has been applying this training for the last four years, including for the Marietta Daily Journal.
In addition to his love of sports, he also loves travel and the outdoors, playing video games and all sorts of card and board games (with chess of course being his favorite!).
You’ll usually find Coach Jack at these schools: Cheatham Hill, Kemp, Murdock and East Side.
